Last weekend was the Relentless Freeze Festival at Battersea Power Station. I went along and had a few cheeky goes on the man-made jump. The whole scenario was kinda random – I got up, had a hotel breakfast, took my kit and board in the back of a black cab and drove to the London venue. I walked over to the jump area, watched a few folks dropping in and then got in a makeshift sketchy-ass lift that went up the side of the jump’s run-in to about 200ft. I got out at the top, it was pretty windy, and looked down a rather steep drop-in ramp. So there was no warm up runs down the piste, no little session on a smaller jump first, just strap in and go straight for it. I’m not going to lie – my heart was pumping.
I made it over the jump fine but I found it quite difficult to get to grips with the narrow run-in and struggled to set up my turns to spin. I only landed 3s and 5s so was a bit disappointed in myself – I guarantee the toughness of riding that thing doesn’t show from the bottom.
The men’s FIS World Cup was on the Saturday and it was a high level of riding. It was great to watch with a lot of double cork spins going down and the English lads held their own which was cool. It was also pretty cool to check out Ben’s Olympics’ runs again, this time on the big screen. Then I had time to enjoy the breakdancers at the fashion show, who are always awesome and make me wish I was a pro dancer or something.
I’ve spent the last two weeks mostly in London – nowhere near the mountains but around tons of snow enthusiasts instead. It was The Ski and Snowboard Show two weeks back, which was great fun and met lots of folks looking forward to getting their winter shred on. Ben Kilner and I had a Q&A [...]
